How do you write a resume for success? A well written resume clearly outlines why you should be hired for a role and can mean the difference between interviewing with a potential employer or client, and you not getting a callback. So how can you ensure that your resume is built for success?
If you’ve read my story then you know that I have a degree in Economics, even though I have never worked in the field. It should therefore not come as a surprise that one of the most common questions I receive when I meet newcomers to the industry is “How did you break into event planning from economics?!”. Beyond having an already established client-base, having a tool that effectively markets, highlights and promote your skills and expertise is essential to success in any field. This is where having a well written resume is crucial.
While I entered event planning through an indirect path, one of the first things I learnt when I chose to work outside of the industry for which I had studied is that I needed to highlight what skills I possessed that would meet my employers needs. Though I had never formally worked for a company planning events, I had experience planning events for friends and family members and had volunteered with charities organizing various social activities. These were administrative skills that proved to be invaluable and when listed on my resume changed the first glance perception of me being an event planning newbie, to someone who knew the basics required for organizing an event.
