Fifteen years ago, I started my first online company -- and it flopped like a bad joke. While I loved the idea of being my own boss and taking control of my journey, I had lots to learn.
I've come a long way since that first business venture, and I've learned so much in the process. There's one lesson, though, that stands out above all the others. Put simply, it's this:
Marketing your business online is not the same as marketing face to face.
What exactly does this mean? It means that the strategies you use online to make your business successful (aka Modern Marketing) are different; and that taking the right actions takes you further than simply doing "more".

My Story
I WASn't THE KID WHO STARTED A LEMONADE STAND.
Born in Jamaica to working class parents, I grew up learning the age old tale of hard work pays off.
Keep your head down, work hard and the results will show in the end.
Like I was taught, I did well in school and got the straight A's, landed the university scholarship and got my gears in motion to enter the working world.
It was while in university that I got the idea for my first business, an online babysitting matching service. I had no experience running a business, and no concept of online marketing, but I was young, eager, full of optimism and ready to work hard just like I was taught - and the business failed.
While I didn't become the business success I was hoping to be then, that failure taught me a valuable lesson: that it was not about working harder, but rather working smarter. I learned the strategies that didn't work online, so when I started my next business, an Interactive Web Form Design company, I knew exactly what it needed to be successful - and it flourished.
I've applied these strategies successfully over and over again in an online vintage purse store, a cake smash outfits store, my event planning company, The Event Certificate, EventPlanningTemplates.com, and most recently FindYourBaker.com.
It can be very easy to feel overwhelmed when marketing your business online. You feel like you're in an ocean screaming for someone to hear you and no one is around. You scream louder, you listen, you wait, but you're not quite sure which direction to swim in to get to a shore.
